TÜV NORD CONFIRMED: 3B MODELS TOXICOLOGICALLY HARMLESS (08-24-2006)
Hamburg, July 2006 – Representing most of the products made of plastic by the Hamburg based company 3B Scientific in Hamburg, the TÜV Nord Institute for Chemistry and Environmental Protection (Institut für Chemie und Umweltschutz) confirmed that the torso model B13 clearly adheres to the relevant permissible limits for ambient air concentrations. 3B Scientific is the leading manufacturer in anatomical teaching aids.
The torso model was examined with regard to emissions of volatile organic chemical compounds. Indoor concentration levels of the different toxic substances were measured after 3 and 28 days. The concentration calculated for the torso e.g. for carbonyl compound formaldehyde was 0.01 ppm (parts per million). This value is five times lower than the recommended value of the World Health Organisation (WHO) which lies at 0.05 ppm for “concentrations without, or of low concern”.
The necessity of this assignment to be undertaken by the TÜV Nord in an independent study was above all important to the managing directors of 3B Scientific due to “discount”-suppliers making inroads into the market of anatomical models. “The material used by these discount-suppliers with low-quality products may be hazardous and the products may be badly designed both from a didactic and academic point of view”, states Otto H. Gies, one of the members of the executive board of 3B Scientific.
Case studies like these take a lot of time and money.
